Press Statement
The Somaliland Journalists Association (SOLJA) strongly denounces the arrest of journalist Abdirizaaq Qaasim, a Saab TV correspondent, which took place last night in Berbera. According to SOLJA’s representative in the Saaxil Region, the journalist was transferred to Hargeisa. However, it remains unclear whether his arrest followed any legal or judicial procedures. Preliminary information suggests that the arrest was politically motivated and instigated by a member of the Somaliland House of Representatives.

SOLJA is actively working to secure the journalist’s immediate release. We remind law enforcement and relevant authorities that press freedom is enshrined in Somaliland’s Constitution, and that journalists must not be subjected to intimidation, arbitrary detention, or threats.

SOLJA urgently calls for:

    • An end to the ongoing arrests and harassment of journalists.
    • The protection of freedom of expression and the independence of the media.

Finally, SOLJA reiterates that journalists play a vital role in informing the public and upholding democratic values. They must not be punished for fulfilling their professional duties. Press freedom is a cornerstone of Somaliland’s democracy and must be protected at all times.
