SOLJA Condemns Unlawful Arrest of Journalist Yasir Ahmed Abdilaahi
The Somaliland Journalists Association (SOLJA) strongly condemns the unlawful arrest of journalist Yasir Ahmed Abdilaahi, who was detained in Hargeisa.
Although the reason for his arrest remains unclear, eyewitnesses report that the detention was carried out by security forces without a court warrant. The manner in which he was apprehended appeared to be an act of intimidation and coercion—clearly inconsistent with legal procedures and the fundamental rights of citizens, particularly journalists fulfilling their professional duties.
SOLJA once again urges full respect for freedom of expression and calls for an immediate end to actions that undermine press freedom. We call on the security agencies to adhere to the rule of law and to follow proper legal procedures when dealing with journalists and media professionals. SOLJA is actively working to secure the release of Yasir Ahmed Abdilaahi and to ensure that his legal rights are upheld and justice is served.
Finally, SOLJA expresses deep concern over the growing number of journalist arrests. To date, 16 journalists have been detained, with only two cases proceeding to trial. We strongly remind all government institutions of their duty to safeguard press freedom—a cornerstone of the democratic values that Somaliland upholds and takes pride in.
