Strategic Meeting between SOLJA and UNTMIS

Overview
The Somaliland Journalists Association (SOLJA) held an important meeting with Mr. Charles Muwunga, the Acting Head of the United Nations Office (UNTMIS) and Head of the Human Rights Section. The meeting took place at SOLJA’s headquarters in Hargeisa.

Purpose of the Meeting:
To discuss the general media environment in Somaliland, the key challenges facing journalists and media institutions, and the current status of the amended Media Law that is under review by the House of Representatives.

Key Discussion Points:

      • The state of media freedom and independence in Somaliland
      • Challenges affecting journalists and press institutions
      • The importance and implications of the amended Media Law
      • Strengthening cooperation between human rights bodies and media organizations

Agreed Outcomes:

      • A shared commitment to strengthening collaboration between SOLJA and human rights institutions
      • Continued engagement to support and protect media freedom and freedom of expression in Somaliland
