SOLJA, Police Chief Agree on Steps to Protect Press Freedom

The leadership of the Somaliland Journalists Association (SOLJA), including the Chairman, held a key meeting with the Commander of the Somaliland Police Force.

The discussion focused on the recurring arrests of journalists, particularly those conducted without court warrants. Both sides emphasized the importance of ending arbitrary detentions and fostering a cooperative relationship between the media and security institutions.

They also agreed that journalists should be granted access to official information to avoid the spread of misinformation.

The two sides committed to building a sustained, formal collaboration aimed at protecting press freedom while ensuring that journalists operate ethically and within national laws.

SOLJA welcomes the constructive understanding shown by the police and hopes these talks will help resolve existing concerns and enhance the role of independent media in Somaliland.
