Independent Media Meet Key Ministers to Protect Press Freedom

Today, on August 25, 2025, the Government of the Republic of Somaliland, SOLJA leadership and representatives of independent media convened an important meeting to discuss the state of the media, the recurrent arrests of journalists, and measures to expedite the approval of Somaliland’s Media Law.

The meeting, attended by the Ministers of the Presidency, Information, Justice, and Interior, focused on fostering a cooperative and trust-based environment, as well as completing the legal framework necessary to guarantee freedom of expression and media independence.

The Chairman of the Somaliland Journalists Association (SOLJA) and other journalists in attendance presented the media’s concerns, particularly the rising number of unlawful detentions of Journalists. They called for the swift implementation of the Media Law and the establishment of the National Media Commission.

In response, the ministers pledged to promote media development, safeguard freedom of expression, and halt arrests that violate legal standards.

Key Outcomes of the Meeting:

Collaborative efforts to expedite the ratification of the Media Law and establish the National Media Council.
Protection of media independence and constitutionally guaranteed freedom of speech.
Ensuring that complaints and legal cases against journalists and media outlets are handled through fair and lawful procedures.
Strengthening cooperation between the government and media organizations to enhance journalists’ skills and professional development.
Establishing a systematic mechanism for resolving conflicts between media outlets and government institutions.

This meeting represents a significant step toward building a free, lawful, and professional media environment that can contribute to democracy and the overall development of Somaliland.
