SOLJA Condemns Arrests and Threats Against Journalists in Somaliland
The Somaliland Journalists Association (SOLJA) strongly condemns the unlawful actions taken against journalists from independent media outlets in Somaliland, actions that undermine freedom of expression and the safety of journalists.
Arrest of Journalists in Borama
Police forces under the Office of the Governor of Awdal Region unlawfully detained in Borama the following journalists:
- Ahmed Sh. Muse Hassan (Ahmed Buudhi), HCTV
- Abdirisak Omar Miicaad (Awliyo), CBA TV
- Cameraman Ahmed Dayib
This arrest took place without any legal justification, violating press freedom and the constitution of the country. The SOLJA Chairman in Awdal Region, together with regional media outlets, immediately initiated joint efforts to secure the journalists’ release, which was achieved through pressure and dialogue.
Threats and Intimidation Against Media in Burao
Meanwhile, the Governor of Togdheer Region, Mr. Ramaax, issued threats and intimidation against journalist Abdicasiis Cawl in Burao yesterday afternoon, after the journalist reported on a donation handed over by the governor to a family who are suffering from fire and lost children. The threats against the journalist included intimidating and a clear demonstration of the intimidation directed at the journalist and the wider regional media.
Call and Recommendation
SOLJA firmly declares that these arrests and threats pose a serious concern over press freedom and to the democratic process in Somaliland. Therefore, the SOLJA calls on the government and regional governors to:
- End unlawful practices that suppress journalists.
- Take concrete steps to protect the safety, dignity, and independence of journalists in Somaliland.
- Ensure that governors comply with government directives on unlawful arrests and intimidation of journalists.
SOLJA once again reiterates that journalists must be free to deliver accurate news and information to the public, without fear, threats, or unlawful detention hindering their work.
