SOLJA denounces Arrest of Journalist Abdicasiis Cawl in Togdheer
The Somaliland Journalists Association (SOLJA) strongly denounces the arrest on 12 Sep. 2025 by the Togdheer Regional Police of journalist Abdicasiis Cawl, one of the reporters operating in Burao city.
This arrest followed an order issued by the Togdheer regional administration. It is noteworthy that this journalist had earlier faced direct threats and intimidation from the Togdheer Governor on Thursday night, when the Governor openly threatened to arrest him – a threat that has now been carried out.
SOLJA considers this action as:
-
- A step that undermines press freedom and the Constitution of the country.
- An act of intimidation against all journalists carrying out their professional duties.
- A move that damages the reputation and democratic process of Somaliland.
SOLJA therefore calls on the security forces and the Togdheer regional administration to:
-
- Immediately release journalist Abdicasiis Ca
- End the unlawful acts aimed at suppressing journalists.
- Ensure that the Somaliland government takes clear measures to safeguard press freedom and the independence of journalists.
- Stop the intimidation and threats directed at the media.
SOLJA reiterates that journalists in Somaliland have the right to report and deliver accurate information that benefits the public, and that no fear, threats, or arbitrary arrests should hinder them from fulfilling their professional duties.
