SOLJA Recognizes Journalists for Reporting on DRAM

The Somaliland Journalists Association (SOLJA) held a ceremony in Berbera to recognize and award the second cohort of journalists who played an important role in reporting on social issues, particularly the impact of natural disasters on rural and urban communities, such as recurring droughts and floods, and their impact on vulnerable groups like women and children.

SOLJA, as part of the Danwadaag program, had previously announced a storytelling competition for Somaliland journalists, offering financial rewards for outstanding stories. During the event, reports produced by the ten journalists who won the competition were presented. The competition was specifically designed for journalists working in the regions of the country.

The reports produced by the journalists focused particularly on the following themes:

  1. Impactful storytelling on climate change and its consequences, including natural disasters and gender based violence driven by natural disasters.

  2. The effects of both natural and man-made disasters on vulnerable groups, highlighting the challenges they face, including the impact on their livelihoods and businesses.

The event aimed to promote in-depth journalism that raises awareness of climate-related challenges and the social consequences of disasters, especially on vulnerable groups within society.
