The Somaliland Journalists Association (SOLJA) is closely following the case concerning the arrest and detention of Journalist Ahmed Zaki Ibrahim, Director of Warrame Media Center.

At approximately 11:00 PM on the night of 22 February, Journalist Ahmed Zaki Ibrahim was taken from the premises of Warrame Media while present at his workplace, according to eyewitness accounts received by the association.

Following the incident, SOLJA immediately undertook efforts to establish the journalist’s whereabouts and the circumstances surrounding his detention. The association contacted relevant security institutions, including the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and police authorities, to seek clarification. Initial inquiries did not provide clear information regarding his place of detention, creating concern over the transparency of the procedures followed after his arrest.

It was later confirmed that the journalist had been transferred to the CID headquarters in Hargeisa, where he was processed as investigations commenced.

On the morning of 23 February, Journalist Ahmed Zaki Ibrahim was brought before the Maroodijeex Regional Court, which ordered a seven-day provisional detention (remand) to facilitate ongoing investigations.

While acknowledging the legal process currently underway, SOLJA remains concerned by the lack of immediate clarity regarding the journalist’s whereabouts during the initial hours following his arrest. The association stresses the importance of ensuring that all legal procedures are conducted in full compliance with the law and with due respect for the rights of the journalist.

SOLJA therefore reiterates the need to:

    • Protect the rights of Journalist Ahmed Zaki Ibrahim throughout the detention period, including adherence to due legal safeguards;
    • Safeguard freedom of expression and press freedom, as guaranteed under the laws of the country.

SOLJA reaffirms its unwavering commitment to defending journalists’ rights and protecting media independence and will continue to closely monitor this case to ensure that due process and fundamental freedoms are respected.
