SOLJA Condemns Detention of Journalist Isdeji, Calls for Immediate Release

Hargeisa, Somaliland — The Somaliland Journalists Association (SOLJA) strongly condemns the detention of journalist Cabdikariin Ciise Liibaan (Isdeji), Bulsho TV’s correspondent in Sheekh District, describing the arrest as a serious violation of press freedom and freedom of expression.

Journalist Cabdikariin was detained today and handed a 14-day remand order after reporting on complaints raised by residents of the Huddisa area concerning the local administration, particularly the Mayor of Sheekh District. Information obtained by SOLJA indicates that the detention is linked to his journalistic work and reporting on matters of public concern.

SOLJA emphasizes that journalists play a vital role in informing the public and reporting citizens’ concerns. No journalist should face intimidation, detention, or punishment for carrying out their professional responsibilities.

The association is further concerned by reports that Journalist Cabdikariin has been transferred to Berbera Prison, a move that raises additional concerns regarding his treatment and wellbeing while in custody.

SOLJA calls on the Sheekh District authorities and security agencies to immediately and unconditionally release Journalist Cabdikariin Isdeji and end actions that undermine the work of independent media.

SOLJA also urges the Somaliland Government and all relevant institutions to uphold constitutional guarantees protecting press freedom, freedom of expression, and the safety of journalists carrying out their professional duties.
