Hargeisa – 30 August 2026: The Somaliland Journalists Association (SOLJA) expresses concern over the detention of journalist Abdiqani Hussein Abokor (Baylood), who was arrested on 29 August 2026. Immediately following his arrest, he was remanded in custody for seven days, after which he was transferred to Hargeisa Central Prison.

The journalist has been charged with preliminary allegations under Articles 215 and 220 of the Somaliland Penal Code, in connection with footage he recorded of poet Jiheeye, who was also detained.

SOLJA is concerned that the journalist was arrested without due legal process and without a court order. The Association calls on the security and justice authorities to ensure that his case is handled in accordance with the law, with fairness and transparency, and that detention and legal proceedings are not used to suppress press freedom or restrict freedom of expression.

SOLJA has provided the journalist with legal representation and is closely monitoring his case, while working to secure the release of Abdiqani Hussein Abokor.

Finally, the Somaliland Journalists Association reiterates its concern over the pressure, intimidation, and detention of journalists. SOLJA calls for the protection of press freedom and the public’s right to access information.
