SOLJA Holds A three day Training on the Basic Laws of Journalism and principles of Human Rights for 25 Journalist in Togdheer Region
Burao-A three day Training on Basis of Journalism and principles of freedom of expression(Human Rights) drawn from Togdheer region of Somaliland jointly organized by Somaliland Journalist Association “SOLJA” SONSAF and funded by SIDA through FORUMSYD, SLRF (Somaliland National Association in Sweden) opened today in City Plaza Hotel , Burao Town.
Mr. Mahmoud Abdi Jama, the Chairman of Somaliland Journalist Association “SOLJA” speaking during the opening ceremony said, “The main objective is to improve national media practices and standards. This will be achieved through training activities targeting journalists from all media outlets and houses in a country that needs to positively interact and communicate with the rest of the world and benefit from access to information in a very dynamic environment and that the training courses was crucial for their day to day work and that it was necessary for equipping local journalist with the necessary skills to deal with complex stories in the Togdheer region and country of which most Journalists lack.
Currently, a large number of media outlets, including TV, radio and newspapers lack training opportunities and the chance to engage with foreign media. This interaction can play a great role in supporting the development of Sudan and its people by raising awareness among the public.
“Freedom of expression, independent media and citizens’ right to communication are essential parts of the Somaliland and the global development agenda. Transparency and openness are basic conditions of development. We cannot speak about functional democracy unless the citizens have the right and opportunity to receive information”, he stated.
Mr. Kayse Ahmed Digaale , the Deputy chairman of Somaliland Journalist Association “SOLJA” addressing the participants drawn from Togdheer , Buuhoodle and Saraar regions said, “ SOLJA is an advocate and resource for the creation of strong, representative both state and independent journalists. With the capacity to promote editorial independence and defends the moral and material interests of journalists, including their professional training and further education.

Mr. Yunis Ali Nuur , veteran journalist and of the facilitators of the three days training workshop said, “The main objective is to improve national media practices and standards , he further urged the participants to make use of the skills garnered during the training.
Other notable dignitaries present during the ceremony were Major Abdi Muse Abdi, the Togdheer regional police boss, Hon Mohamed Murad the Mayor of Burao Town just to mention a few.
