15 days Training on Development communication for Somaliland Journalists and awarded ceremony
Somaliland Journalist Association [SOLJA] in collaboration with ministry of planning and national development department of communication Hub has organized 15 days training for the role of media on social development program. This training was financially supported Somaliland Development Fund SDF and was conducted on 24th December 2016 to 10th January 14, 2017 at Haraf Hotel. This training was benefited and participate 90 individual journalists from different media institutions which comprised male and female journalists including editors, producers and reporters drawn from printing press, televisions and online media such as websites.
The objective of the training was:-
- To introduce journalist participants the role of media on social development programs, and to discuss the function of developmental journalism, particularly the impacts of droughts in Somaliland (Agriculture, livestock, roads and emergency efforts) and familiarize ethics and proper reporting of social affairs.
This training was different for the previous media trainings that were conducted, because this training is an outcome of a research that SOLJA and communication Hub were monitoring daily the contents of four News papers as a sample of Somaliland printing press which mostly reporting political issues and there are other sectors that need to be reported such as environment, social, Water and other related social issues. After the output of the monitoring media contents we proposed that this training has its importance for re-shifting journalist to report social needed issues and SDF accepted the proposed issues.
Apart from the importance of this communication for development training the trainees were sent to the fields area that the projects on development which SDF is supporting is going on such as Xamaas Road, Aburing, Digibis, Horahaadlay and Dila.
Hence, participants for the training were praised the importance of this kind of training and they showed their interest to have this opportunity to capacitate their knowledge and experience on reporting development programs.
After the training were closed six day later SOLJA and Ministry of information department of Communication hub is organized a closure ceremony for the training and awarding 90 journalist participants accomplishment certificates and who had won the appraisal and the evaluation of the field reports done during the training to gift a special awards including 3 Laptops, 3 Camera digitals, and 3 Recording Radios for each training participants three highest marks. This training closing ceremony was held at Ambassador Hotel on 16 January 2017.
